Li Chen Exhibition Highlights from the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei: A Must Visit This Summer

I recently went to the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei to see a fantastic exhibition. Being : In / Voluntary Drift ─ Li Chen Solo Exhibition is not to be missed. I had never heard of Li Chen before seeing the exhibition, but his work is extremely impressive. A lot of what he has done is influenced by his experience of sculpting Buddhist sculptors. In some way he has twisted them into something more disturbingly relatable.

The first sculptor I came across was the Butterfly Kingdom. The sculptor was reminiscent of traditional Buddhist design, except, unlike the usual 6 arms, this one has 12, each with a modern gesture from high-five to the middle finger. The body is round and voluptuous, like a woman’s curves and the face is hidden. It is a fitting piece of the old and new in a way that captured my attention for a very long time.

The exhibition will be running until the end of August and admission is only $50 NTD per person. I would highly recommend it.
